When Do I need an SF6 Gas PPE Kit?

Anytime an SF6 breaker is suspected of having a fault or arc flash, it is recommended that the proper PPE be worn to protect against harmful arc byproducts. These byproducts are formed as a result of moisture, heat, and SF6 combining at a molecular level. The remainder of the byproducts are related to the various materials inside the breaker, such as those found on the main and arcing contacts. To learn more about SF6 gas, click here.

How do Arc Byproducts form?

Moisture will typically enter GIE in three ways:

1. It naturally occurs due to off gassing (desorption) from materials/absorbers caused by temperature changes, and permeation through O-rings. This is the primary reason desiccants are used in SF6 switchgear.
2. Through leakage. In much higher concentrations than air, moisture also migrates from wet to dry areas due to partial pressures. In simple terms, moisture will migrate from wet to dry to try and equalize the two
3. Handling errors can also introduce moisture.

What are the byproducts?

Most primary byproducts that initially form are very unstable and quickly break down which is a good thing as many of them are very hazardous to people.
